Oblong is a small village located in southern Illinois. It is positioned in Crawford County and is the 2nd largest community therein. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were about 1,500 people living in Oblong in 2016.
In 1812, Range Road was surveyed. This road intersects with Vandalia Road in present-day Oblong. The construction of this road contributed greatly to the formation of Oblong. In 1853, O. W. Odell built a storeroom at the intersection. Shortly after Odell arrived, others relocated to the intersection and in 1855 a store building was constructed. After the construction of the store building, several other individuals arrived and the Village of Oblong quickly grew in size.
Despite the small size of Oblong, there are many things to see and do in the village. Several festivals take place in Oblong in each year including the Crawford County Fair and the Oblong Antique Tractor & Engine Show. These events attract individuals from all corners of Illinois. Oblong is also home to Oblong Park. This park is located in the northeastern corner of the village and features a beautiful lake and playground equipment.
Oblong is located in a climate that experiences four distinct seasons. This means it is necessary for residents to have efficient heating and cooling systems installed in their homes. These help individuals stay comfortable inside their homes. Throughout the months of December, January, and February, daytime temperature highs average in the mid-30s. At night, temperatures dip well below freezing. Also, snowfall is common during the winter season. Efficient heating systems like heat pumps are sufficient to keep most homes in Oblong heated.
Central air conditioning units should be installed in the homes of Oblong residents in addition to heating systems. Daytime temperatures can climb to the low-90s during the months of June, July, and August. Efficient cooling units help individuals stay cool and comfortable inside their homes.
